Sump Pump and Sewer Backup Insurance

With recent heavy rains in southwest Minnesota, the City wants to remind residents about sump pump and sewer backup insurance coverage.  While municipal systems are designed to handle infiltration from rain, catastrophic events like the 7-8+ inches falling in some communities today, can overwhelm even the best systems. Standard homeowners insurance policies typically do not cover damages caused by sewer backups, however most companies offer additional coverage at a nominal rate to cover sump pump and/or sewer backups.

Also, one of the main contributors to sewer backups during heavy rainfall is sump pumps that are illegally discharged into the sanitary sewer system.  Sanitary sewer mains are not sized to handle sump pumps and storm water, and can be overwhelmed if homeowners discharge storm water into basement floor drains, laundry tubs, toilets, or other sanitary sewer connections.  Please remember if you have a sump pump, the City Code requires it be hard piped and discharged to the exterior of the house.
