After the first significant snowfall of the winter, the Wright County Highway Department reminds area residents that pushing snow from driveways out onto roads or streets is dangerous, and against the law. State laws prohibit plowing, shoveling, blowing or in any way depositing snow on any public roadway. The snow, which may be left on the roadway or along the side of the road can create hazards for motorists as well as snow removal crews and equipment. In past years, snowplows have been damaged by hitting compacted and frozen snow deposited next to roadways. Dumping snow onto roadways is punishable as a misdemeanor, and the property owner or person who dumped the snow could be liable in any potential civil lawsuit.
